So you’re getting pumped for summer, right?  Warm weather, sunshine, finally being able to enjoy the great outdoors in less that 17 layers? Sounds pretty great! You might even be thinking about a trip you’re going to take, hiking in the mountains, car camping with the fam, or backpacking with your favorite four legged friend.

The first thing you have to think about, after you’ve decided what kind of trip you’re taking, is what kind of shelter you’ll need. Regardless of where you’re going, if you’re planning on sleeping under the stars, you’ll need a tent. At Earth’s Edge we’re here to make sure you get the right tent for your trip, which is why we put together a short-list of our favorite tents in all sizes.  Check out what tent is right for you, based on size and activity:

1. Extreme solo hiker

The ultimate tent for trekking or hiking, the Seedhouse SL 2 by Big Agnes is an ultralight three season option. With a trail weight of about 2lb 15 oz, and a total weight of 3lb 6 oz, it’s easy to find room for it in your pack. Add that to the fact that its new and improved sidewalls and dry entry vestibule keep you safe and dry no matter the weather, and it becomes the perfect choice for your spring, summer, or fall trek. This is a great choice for the minimalist hiker who plans on covering as much distance as possible because it won’t weigh you down, but it’s big enough for you and your gear to sleep in, rugged enough to protect you from the elements, and simple to put together.

2. Backpacker who won’t sacrifice on comfort OR rugged backpacking duo

If you’re an avid solo backpacker who appreciates a bit more space and comfort, or if you’re looking for a two-man tent for your serious partner treks, then the Copper Spur UL 2 by Big Agnes is your best option. The Copper Spur is one of the most popular tent lines out there for backpacking because of its super light construction that doesn’t sacrifice on Big Agnes’ trademark rugged durability. This tent, weighing in at a total of 3lbs and 1 oz, means you don’t have to carry much extra weight for a lot of extra comfort. Comfortably fits two people, but it’s also ideal for the solo hiker who wants more space for himself and all of his gear.

3. Two+ campers OR casual hikers

Are you and your partner traveling with a dog? Are you a hiking duo with a lot of gear? Or maybe you and the boys just need a tent for your fishing trips.  Whatever your situation, the North Face’s Stormbreak 3 is the perfect three person tent option for the casual hiker or avid camper. Coming in a little heavy at a total weight of 6 pounds, it’s suited to a shorter, more relaxed hiking trip, or great for a camping trip.  The best part about this tent is that it’s extremely functional and ridiculously affordable.  Way less expensive than its competition, the Stormbreak 3 works just as well, if not better than other three-person tents in its class.  It’s waterproof, fully seam sealed, includes a rain fly, and a footprint is sold separately.

4. Family camping trip OR mountain biking trip

Sporting a whopping 81 square feet, and standing at over 6 feet tall, the Big House 6 by Big Agnes is a great choice for a car camping trip, or a mountain biking excursion.  With plenty of space to stand up, bikers will be able to change easily, and families can spend rainy days inside playing cards. An optional vestibule makes this monster even bigger, and gives you room to protect your bikes, and camping gear from the elements.  An excellent three season option, the tent is coated with 1500mm polyurethane waterproofing, and will keep you warm and dry in case of inclement weather.
