Nalgene water bottles have long been one of the top names in outdoor hydration. They’re super lightweight, durable, and most importantly, they don’t leak – which keeps your pack dry out on the trail. They’re an excellent product built for adventurers, by adventurers, and we love carrying their complete line of products in our store. The only question we regularly get about Nalgene water bottles is how to wash them. Most of our customers want to know if they’re dishwasher safe, or how to wash them properly if they’re out on the trail. And really, these questions make a lot of sense. If you’re drinking out of your Nalgene water bottle every day, it’s really important that you’re keeping it as clean as possible so you don’t get sick. So, let’s get to some of those questions:
Are Nalgene Bottles Dishwasher Safe?
The short answer is yes. Nalgene water bottles can be safely run through the dishwasher if they’re placed securely on the top shelf. It is important to make sure that you place them in the dishwasher upside down in a way that they won’t flip over when the dishwasher starts up. If your Nalgene bottle flips on its side or right-side up while it’s in the machine, it’s very likely that it won’t actually come out of the washer clean. So make sure it’s in their securely, and you should be good to go after one cycle.
What if my Nalgene Bottle doesn’t fit in the dishwasher?
This is another common problem. Sometimes when you purchase the larger-sized Nalgene bottles, you’ll notice that they don’t properly fit on the top rack of the dishwasher. Don’t worry, you can still clean your bottle, it’ll just take some warm, soapy water. If your bottle has been sitting out for a few days, fill it with soapy water and let it sit for a while. Then put the top on, shake the soapy water around a bit, and rinse it thoroughly. So long as you’re using quality antibacterial soap, your bottle should be good to go once it’s dry. Make sure not to use a lot of soap, as there is always the possibility that it could leave a soapy aftertaste––a bit too clean for our taste. If you’re worried about the soap, you can always simply wash the Nalgene bottle with water and baking soda instead.
What if I’m on the trail?
If you’re on the trail and want an easier way to clean your water bottle than a standard soap and water method, or if you’re just worried about totally disinfecting your Nalgene bottle, then you can pick up some water bottle cleaning tablets. Yes, they make special tablets just for disinfecting water bottles, and they’re perfectly safe to use on your Nalgene bottle. Just put the tablet into the bottle with water, screw the lid on, and give it a good shake. The tablet will work to remove any germs for you, ensuring you’ve got a nice, clean, safe Nalgene bottle for the rest of your hike or camping trip. Just make sure to rinse the bottle out well after you shake the cleaning tablet around in there.
***Bonus tip: To save money on water bottle disinfectant tablets, buy denture cleaning tablets instead. They do the exact same thing, they just cost a lot less. Make sure to buy a name brand denture cleaning tablet with extra strength cleaning power to ensure you get an option that removes all the germs.
How often should I wash my Nalgene Water Bottle?
Finally, we thought we’d let you know that you should be washing your Nalgene bottle every single day. While this may come as a surprise to many, it is really important to wash your bottle this often. Even though you’re just filling it up with water each time, germs love moist environments and tend to thrive in places like water bottles. To ensure that you’re staying as healthy as possible, and avoiding gems as best you can, you should wash and let your water bottle dry out every night. That way it will be fresh and clean for the next day.
